- Its 1820, and Missouri wants to enter our union as a slave state. But this will break the balance between the number of slave states and free states in our union because now we have 11 free states and 11 slave states.

- We insist on popular sovereignty because we believe that the slaves should have the right to decide whether a state is a slave state or free state.

- Meanwhile, there's a debate going on between Congress. They were deciding whether to let Missouri enter the union as a slave state or free state.
- Slavery decreased but didn't stop
- People were arguing whether or not congress has the right to spread or limit slavery. Northerners want to abolish slavery but southerners said that the states should have the power to decide.

- Congress made a compromise which states that Missouri will enter the state as a slave state but the Northern Territory of Maine would be admitted as a free state. The compromise also banned slavery throughout the remaining Louisiana Purchase territory north of the southern boundary of Missouri.#160;
- The compromise limited the spread of slavery but it did nothing to abolish slavery in states that already had slavery.
