- The Capulet household's servants taunt the Montague household's servants. A fight breaks out between the two households, revealing the families' mutual enmity. The prince intervenes, warning both families that peace for Verona depends on their getting along.
- Romeo goes about Verona incessantly after Rosiline rejects him. He demonstrates how powerful his emotions can be, especially when they are motivated by love.
- Paris and Capulet contemplate marrying Juliet, but Capulet is hesitant owing to Juliet's age, but Paris tells him that he is worthy of his daughter. Romeo and Benvolio intend to interrupt the Capulet's feast in order to slaughter suitable ladies for Romeo's scars.
- Juliet and Lady Capulet talk about her marriage and how Paris wanted to marry her. The nurse enters, narrating anecdotes about her childhood and fleshing out the Nurse's persona.
- Romeo, Benvolio, and Mercutio meet with their masks, ready to infiltrate the Capulet's banquet. They're all anxious about how they'll get inside the feast and what they'll do while there. Mercutio tells Romeo about Queen Mab of the fairies, who visits people in their dreams to inform them that they will be married shortly.
- Romeo slips inside the feast, meets Juliet, and forgets about his feelings for Rosaline. He urges her to wash away his sins by kissing him. Romeo is discovered to be a Montague and runs in terror. When Juliet discovers he is a Montague, she becomes determined to marry Romeo.
