  • Do you know the source of variation for these 2 nearly identical clovers are? The answer is mutation and meiosis. I was able to get both clovers, but even though they look similar they live in different environments!
  • Cool, can we take a look at the places you found them?
  • White Striped Clover
  • Plain Clover
  • This is an example of where I found the Plain clovers, there were an abundant amount of them here due to the lack of herbivores, meaning less predators to eat them thus not needing the white stripe to protect itself from predators. This place also had herbivores that were not present at all in the winter, making it even more safe for the plain clovers. This is in Minnesota. The yearly precipitation is also 66-76 cm which is good enough for plain clovers but not enough to support the amount of energy needed for the striped ones to prevail in this environment.
  • Cool, I can also see that the ratio between the two clovers is definitely in the side of the plain clovers for this place.
  • Now if you compare the previous place (Minnesota) to this place (North Carolina), you can see that there is a way LARGER population of herbivores, the predators of clovers, present. This makes it harder for plain clovers to live and makes the trait of the white stripe (a powerful poison) great to have as it will deter animals from trying to eat it. Thus, making the white striped clover more abundant trait here and a bigger population.
  • Being Eaten
  • Ah, okay, I'm catching on. So here in North Carolina the yearly precipitation is 107-117 cm which provides enough amounts of water to keep the white clovers full of energy and able to reproduce (as they need more energy to keep alive because of their white stripe/poison) unlike in Minnesota.
