- 5 years before the events of the story, Dwight Arno (antagonist) gets home after work. When he is informed by his wife Ruth that she was cheating on him with someone else. Fueled by rage he puts a beating on her and his son Sam.
- Punish me.
- Dwight takes his son Sam to a sports event in hopes of forming a better connection with him. After what happened years ago.
- Do you remember what happened that night?
- My dad told me he hit a black dog.
- Dwight is returning Sam home after the game. When all of a sudden a kid appears on the road. The car strikes the boy. Instead of stopping Dwight drives away.
- A day after the accident Dwight reads in a newspaper and sees on the news that the kid he hit is named Josh he was the son of a man named Ethan Learner and that car crash killed Josh, Dwight is now a wanted man. He begins to feel extremely guilty and doesn't know what to do.
- Months later Ethan is picking up his daughter Emma from school still suffering from the death of his other child he encounters Sam at the school. Sam tells Ethan that he was there when his dad Dwight hit something the same night on the same road.
- Ethan realizes that Dwight is guilty of killing his son Josh. Full of rage and looking for closure Ethan goes on his quest for revenge.
