  • Mary Shelley’s novel begins with Robert Walton communicating with his sister, Margaret Saville, via letters. Walton is describing to his sister his preparation and journey to the Arctic as he is attempting to discover the origin of North Pole magnetism and a passage to the countries on the other side of the world. Though, soon after reaching the Arctic, his ship became enclosed by ice. During this delay, he found a man named Victor Frankenstein and took him aboard his ship.
  • William is murdered and Justine is accused and found guilty.
  • “We know you did not do this to William! We believe you!” -Elizabeth
  • Victor Frankenstein recovers in Walton’s ship for a couple days and then begins informing Walton how he ended up in the Arctic sea by himself with an insufficient amount of provisions. Victor begins by describing his family members and the place he grew up, being Geneva. He mentions his father, Alphonse, his mother, Caroline, his sister, Elizabeth, his younger brother, Ernest, and his youngest brother, William.
  • Victor’s creature informs Victor of his miseries and asks for a female companion.
  • Victor continues his story by stating he left for the university of Ingolstadt in Germany soon after his mother’s death from scarlet fever. Here, he embraced his passion for natural philosophy especially since he was encouraged by his chemistry professor, M.Krempe. Victor seeks to discover the secret of life and once he does, forms a body out of grave-yard parts. When the body is finished, it comes alive and frightens Victor, resulting in him abandoning his creation in fear.
  • Victor abandons Clerval to create a female creature, however, ends up destroying her.
  • “I will never create a being like you! You will just create a race of devils with her!”
  • In running from his apartment in Ingolstadt, Victor encounters Henry Clerval, his former school mate. Though he feels relieved in finding company, Victor falls into a nervous fever. After recovering from this fever, victor receives a letter from his father informing him of the murder of his youngest brother, William. This causes Victor and Henry to travel to Geneva. In doing so, Victor discovers Justine, his housekeeper, was accused of the murder. Though Victor believes his creature is responsible for the murder, Justine is killed because Victor remains silent.
  • Victor and his family decide to head to their vacation house in Belrive. Here, Victor has an encounter with the monster when climbing to the peak of Montanvert in Chamonix. The monster begins informing Victor of how harshly he’s been treated, mentioning the De-Lacey family, the owners of the hut he hid in and the people he learned how to articulate from, rejecting him and him being shot by a man after saving a drowning woman. He finished his story by requesting Victor for a female companion to relieve his misery.
  • Victor is given permission to journey with Clerval to England before marrying Elizabeth. Here, Victor plans on gathering research and supplies to create the female companion he promised his creature. Victor leaves Clerval to begin his laboratory work in one of the islands off Scotland, Orkney. Extremely close to finishing his work, Victor destroys the female creature in response to seeing his male creation glaring at him from the window. This causes his creature to growl and promise to “be there on his wedding night.”
