- In the exposition we meet our main character America Singer and her mother. We start in America's house in Illéa where she lives in the future. We also learn that our main character has been chosen for the competition of love, The Selection. In her world people are rated by their castes. Her family are fives and want to have their status elevated by her entering the castle. However, she doesn't want to go.
- Climax
- America goes up to her childhood play house where she finds a visitor. She feels like everyone is pushing her to join The Selection, but learns how much money their family could earn. America's boyfriend, Aspen convinces her that even though she doesn't want to, she should join The Selection. She makes him a promise that she'll go but love him forever.
- Falling Action
- America arrives at the castle and meets her competition, there are girls from all provinces and backgrounds. She meets a lot of new friends and a couple enemies. She finds out that a lot of girls' priorities are different. Some even don't want the prince at all. Some are only here for fame and money. America becomes confused about her priorities and whether or not she wants the prince.
- Resolution
- After yelling and hitting him when she became claustrophobic in the castle, America goes on a walk with the prince (Maxon). After talking and walking she realizes that she loves him. She spends more time with him in order to be close to him and they talk often. Any thoughts of a future with Aspen leave her mind.
- When the castle gets attacked by rebels, America takes her maids and hides. This is seen as strange since most people believe that since the maids are of a low castes they don't matter. One of her maids has a panic attack on the floor of the kitchen and America comforts her. She proves that everybody deserves respect no matter their background.
- After long days in the castle, she realizes how much she wants to stay. She met so many new people and friends and has made the castle feel like home. After a brutal cut of the number of girls America makes it. Now the only thing between her and the crown is the elite.
