  • But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou, her maid, art far more fair than she. Be not her maid since she is envious. Her vestal livery is but sick and green, And none but fools do wear it. Cast it off! It is my lady. Oh, it is my love. Oh, that she knew she were! She speaks, yet she says nothing. What of that?

Cast it off!10It is my lady. Oh, it is my love.Oh, that she knew she were! She speaks, yet she says nothing. What of that?
  • She speaks. O, speak again, bright angel, for thou art As glorious to this night, being o’er my head,As is a wingèd messenger of heaven Unto the white-upturnèd wondering eyes Of mortals that fall back to gaze on him When he bestrides the lazy puffing clouds And sails upon the bosom of the air.
  • Ay me.
  • O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name, Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.
  • Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?
  • After seeing Juliet at the ball, Romeo has been desperate to see Juliet. So, Romeo sneaks into the Capulet's Orchard to see Juliet. He talks about Juliet's beauty as she enters her balcony. This monologue gives us an understanding of Romeoś feelings toward Juliet.
  • So Romeo would, were he not Romeo called, Retain that dear perfection which he owes Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, And for that name, which is no part of thee Take all myself.
  • Tis but thy name that is my enemy. Thou art thyself, though not a Montague. What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot, Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part Belonging to a man. O, be some other name! What’s in a name? That which we call a rose By any other word would smell as sweet.
  • Juliet isn't aware that Romeo can hear her. Romeo gets excited when he hears Juliet speak.
  • I take thee at thy word. Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized.Henceforth I never will be Romeo.
  • By a name I know not how to tell thee who I am. My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself Because it is an enemy to thee. Had I it written, I would tear the word.
  • So stumblest on my counsel? What man art thou that, thus bescreened in night.
  • Juliet wonders why Romeo has to be a Montage and asks him to change his name so that they can be together. Juliet doesn't know that Romeo is listening to her, and Juliet is trying to think of the possibility of falling in love with her enemy.
  • Neither, fair maid, if either thee dislike.
  • My ears have not yet drunk a hundred words Of that tongue’s uttering, yet I know the sound. Art thou not Romeo, and a Montague
  • Here Juliet questions why Romeo is a Montague and refuses the fact that Romeo is a Montague. Juliet says that she is in love with Romeo because he is just Romeo but, her love won't matter much because of his last name Montague. Juliet now argues the fact that even if they are enemies, it doesn't matter to her as long as they love each other. .
  • Romeo came out of the bushes to tell Juliet that from now on he will never be Romeo. Juliet realizes that someone was listening to everything she was saying. Romeo also says he doesn't want to say his name because it's her enemy and that if it was written on the paper, he would tear it apart.
  • Juliet recognizes that the voice sounds familiar and that it's a Montague, which is Romeo. Romeo in, response, says that he will neither be of those if she dislikes them.
