- Starr testifies to the Grand Jury

- This moment is significant because it shows how brave Starr was being for Khalil, even if she didn't realize it, given the fact that she's in front of a grand jury. As Starr's mom says, "Brave doesn't mean you're not scared, Starr, it means you go on even though you're scared. And you're doing that." (19.71). Additionally, it shows how far she's come from before, where she was barely able to make it through the interview with the police.
- Starr and Hailey's strained relationship has been building up negative tension throughout the novel so far. When Starr fought with Hailey at Maya's house, the tension exploded and their friendship was ended. However, they never directly addressed Khalil himself. When they have the fight in Chapter 20, Hailey uses Starr's connection to Khalil against her, which pushes her over the edge. Hailey says, "...The cop probably did everyone a favor. One less drug dealer on the--" (20.43). This moment is significant because it is like a second and even more intense explosion of the tension built up between Starr and Hailey. Additionally, though Hailey has acted as an analogy for teens becoming a product of the media they consume throughout the novel, this is the climax of the analogy as now, Hailey's true nature and beliefs have been shown directly to the readers.
- This moment in the novel is significant as Seven standing up to Iesha can be applied to Starr standing up to the grand jury (or even society as a whole). Seven is standing up to his lifelong oppressor Iesha, who threw him out of her house and mistreated him. Like Starr, he had to find the confidence and bravery within himself to stand up to her, which was not easy to do. Seven told her what she had done wrong and told her what she needed to change. "H*ll, it wasn't even like she came to any of my stuff, so why bother? You couldn't even show up to my graduation yesterday!" (21.125). This is the same thing Starr will need to do, except the oppressor is society itself.
