  • This shows that throughout the novel, the hat symbolises Holden's difference. He is embarrass to wear it sometimes, but it his his protection blanket as he feels comfortable with it. He also seeks deep connection through the novel. So through phoebe being the one to put the her on, it shows her acceptance of him, and that he has that connection that he has seeked. This links to the theme of alienation as a form of self preservation and childhood innocence.
  • "You could see the whole field from there, and you could see the two teams bashing each other all over the place. You couldn't see the grandstand too hot, but you could hear them all yelling, deep and terrific on the Pencey side, because practically the whole school except me was there..."
  • This shows how Holden thinks he is superior to the rest of his peers as he is standing high above them looking down. Along with this, he shows his conflicting inner turmoil, as he is sitting alone as a form of self isolation. This links to the theme of self isolation as a form of self preservation.

  • This scene shows Holden's self-isolation, as he feels displaced and disconnected from the adult world. It also allows us to understand Holden's raw violent emotions, showing his inability to cope in a positive way. This links to the themes of self-isolation as a form of protection. Garage symbolises a storage escape, where he is storing away his memories and preserving them, keeping them safe from the phony world.
