  • Hey Tim. Today in physics class we learned about Newton's laws of motion, but I fell asleep and missed the lesson. Do you think you could help me out?
  • Sure Bob I'd be happy to help you. Let me explain it in hockey terms so it's easier for you to understand!
  • Newton's first law, the law of inertia states that an object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion will continue to move at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an outside force.
  • Ok. So how does that relate to hockey?
  • Right now the puck is at rest. It will stay at rest unless I apply an outside force such as shooting it.
  • If the puck is in motion, it will stay in motion unless an outside force such as you shooting it, hitting the boards, or even friction stopping it.
  • Yea that makes sense.
  • Newton's second law, the law of acceleration states that the acceleration of an object depends on the size of force acting upon it and the mass of the object
  • Show me how that one works.
  • The harder I shoot the puck the more it will accelerate, compared to if I didn't shoot it very hard.
  • What if the puck had more mass?
