- Miss Lucy overheard two boys talking about their future as actors. This enraged Miss Lucy and she told them that their acting future will never happened because they were created to donate their organs.
- Kathy, Tommy, Ruth, and five other Hailsham students move into the cottages, away from Hailsham. Older kids called veterans already live at the cottages as well.
- Ruth gets upset when Kathy asks about the motion she does when she says goodbye to Tommy. Ruth claims that Kathy is just jealous because she made friends with the veterans and Kathy hasn't.
- Rodney and Chrissie come back from Norfolk with the news that they saw Ruth's possible.
- Ruth, Rodney, Chrissie, Tommy, and Kathy take the trip to Norfolk and stop in a cafe. They talk about their plans of what to do with Ruth's possible.
- While in Norfolk, the group decides to wander into a store called Woolworths. Chrissie starts to tell Ruth about the rumor she heard about deferrals. She says that if two Hailsham students can prove that they are in love, they can get a deferral of a few years.
