  • Rose shows her support for her son Cory is through trying to persuade her husband, saying, “Why don’t you let that boy go ahead and play football, Troy? Ain’t no harm in that. He’s just trying to be like you with the sports (Wilson, 40). Rose showing her support for Cory is strengthening their bond, building a fence that keeps them both together.
  • Along with the painful strength of being his wife, and her sacrifices just to be with Troy. Rose expresses her feelings to Troy, stating, “I been standing with you! I been right here with you, Troy. I got a life too. I gave eighteen years of my life to stand in the same spot as you. Don't you think I ever wanted other things? Don't you think I ever had dreams and hopes? What about my life. What about me?” (Wilson, 67). The dishonesty from Troy puts a fence up between him and Rose.
  • Rose shows this new commitment to raising the baby in the way she includes her into the family, stating, “Raynell, come and say hello to your brother. This is your brother Cory. You remember Cory” (Wilson 86). Although Raynell is not Rose’s biological daughter, she still makes sure that she knows that regardless of what her father did in the past, it will never change the fact that she is loved and cared for among her family. Rose is trying to keep all of her children on one side of this fence.
