- Hi Everyone! My name is Lori, I'm from Tucson but I currently live in Sierra Vista, AZ, and I am a biology major! Nice to meet you!
- While I believe that focusing on the problems people are facing with climate change is important, I believe that we aren't going to get anywhere without focusing on the smaller creatures in the world. In particular, I believe insects are vital to the environment.
- Insects are almost always seen as pests, but they play such a huge role in ecosystems and food chains. Without them, I believe a lot of things will begin to fall apart. The dramatic decrease in insect populations is something that I believe should be a major environmental concern.
- At the same time, a lot of good has been done in recent years. Scientists have recently begun to genetically modify invasive species of mosquitos so that they are unable to breed, which can safely reduce their numbers without pesticides or draining water sources. This to me seems like a big step.
- Once we do this on a national level, we need to bring the world together and make a conclusive plan to promote more sustainable farming practices.
- Given the rate of insects dying due to climate change, I'm really uncertain about the future. Humanity simply can't live without these important little guys. And with commercial farming techniques still using many harmful pesticides, we're already seeing a lot of hurt being done to pollinators.
- But we certainly still have a long road ahead of us when it comes to real progress.
- One thing I think everyone in the US could do to help would be to start a personal garden at home, or even a community garden!
- Community gardens can be used to grow vegetables, fruit, and other healthy staples for neighborhoods, so that there is less reliance on commercial farming. This is also an activity that can bring communities together for a common good!
- Personal gardens can be used to grow herbs for cooking, and you can plant flowers that the native bees and pollinators in your region prefer.
- These kinds of pesticides can be used by individuals, but more research should be done to create more varieties of pesticides that don't have harmful effects on the environment as a whole.
- Something important to remember when gardening is what kinds of pesticide to use. There are a few brands that are specifically made to not harm pollinators.
- However, this is at the individual level. A bigger idea would be to step up the laws used by the EPA and the USDA to take better care of how pesticides used in commercial farming won't hurt the insects we need to protect the most!
- This is probably going to be the hardest part. But we NEED to have international, global environmental policies in place to have sustainable farming become effective. We need to aid developing countries develop better farming practices that stop harm from being done to the environment of the entire planet.
