- While Reese and Jude get to know each other Reese wanted to show Jude his work, Photos. While showing Jude a photo the author describes, "She only saw Reese, scruffy face, shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows, that loop of hair always falling onto his forehead" (Bennet117). This was one of the few physical descriptions of reese in the story, detailing his face, hair, and outfit.
- Reese responds, "it's not about you" (Bennet 132). The interaction quoted explains an insecurity of reese. the only time reese starts to get defensive is conversations about his appearance.
- Jude notices Reese's painful winces and facial expressions due to scars and bruises and says,"If it hurts you. You don't have to wear it here. I dont care what you look like"
- In the first sentence of chapter five the author states, "On the road from El Dorado, Therese Anne Carter became Reese"(Bennet 103). The first sentence of the chapter highlights where Reese was coming from and continues to speak of his journey and transformation as an individual.
