Darry then, Slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door. Suddenly it was deathly quiet (Hinton 50). I chose this piece of evidence because Ponyboy had already thought Darry had hated him. Then when Darry smacked him it made Pony think, Wow he really hates me. Pony then realized that Darry really does love him and the slap was on accident.
Dally told Johnny and Pony, 'You get hardened in jail. I don't want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me... (Hinton 90). I chose this piece of evidence because it's showing Dally looking out for Johnny and Pony. Dally genuinely cares for Pony and Johnny he knows that they will be able to live a better life than him if they go down the right path.
As Johnny took his last breathes he said, 'Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold... The pillow seemed to sink a little, and Johnny died.' (Hinton 148). I chose this piece of evidence because I feel like it helped Ponyboy realize he should be himself and not change for others in the end.
