  • Another lab??
  • Geez, I need to get home soon... where am I now?!
  • Oh my, who are you?! What are you trying to do?
  • Shhh, we are trying to focus in here!
  • I’m not sure but I am finding my way out.
  • That’s my question to you, boy. How did you end up in this lab?
  • Can I know what are you guys up to?
  • Well,we are trying to determine whether protein or DNA is the geneticmaterial for T2 bacteriophage.
  • What's a T2 bacteriophage?
  • It is a type of virus. This one infects E.coli.
  • he doesn't know bacteriophages? who is this kid..?
  • Well, outsiders are not allowed but you are very curious and cute, so I will allow it.
  • Ohhhh. Do you mind if I stay and observe this experiment?
  • seriously?!
  • The phage consists of DNA molecule which is surrounded by a protein coat. In batch 1, phages are grown with radioactive sulphur. In batch 2, phages are grown with radioactive phosphorus.
  • I guess I will explain it to you.
  • That's interesting!
  • We chose sulfur and phosphorus because we can find sulfur in protein, but not DNA and vice versa for phosphorus. The labeled phages are mixed radioactively with bacteria and infect the bacteria cells.
  • The mixture is then centrifuged so bacteria forms a pellet.
  • There is no radioactivity in the pellet for batch 1 phages, as protein remains outside the host cell. There is radioactivity in the pellet for batch 2 phages, as the DNA enters the cell.
  • Come here boy, observe this!
  • Woa! So this proves that DNA is the genetic material for T2 bacteriophage, because it enters the cell!
  • Congrats Sir and Madam!
  • Brilliant! Yes! We’ve succeeded!
  • I must make a move now though, I'm still lost... and my mum will kill me if I don't reach home.
  • Who is this kid..?
  • Safe trip home then!
  • Bye!
  • I hope this one takes me back to my time...
