- As Asim sits in school, he wonders what his family was doing in his home village, Warab. He imagines his father, hunting for food, his mother cleaning up, and his sister tending the cattle. His family was never rich but they were known in Warab. He was in the Nilote tribe and 11 years old. He was born during the Second Sudanese Civil War, which was a very dangerous time for people in Southern Sudan... Close to the end of the day, soldiers attacked his village and forced them out. Who were these people? Asim wondered "All of you must run into the desert, and never come back. Go! Now!." His teacher said. So that's what he and his classmates did.
- I wonder what my family is doing.
- Asim lowered his head and ran, for what felt like hours. He didn't look back. Is my family alive? Where are we going? What will happen after we find refuge? ... After a long time running, he stopped and started walking. It was extremely hot and dry. They had very little food or water. He had heard within the group they were going to Ethiopia to find a refugee camp called Nyguenyyiel.
