- Tom and Daisy are having a meal with Nick and Jordan. They are both pretending to be happy even though they both dislike one another and are in an unhealthy marriage. The author illustrates the theme of appearance vs reality when Jordan says, "Toms got some women in New York"(Fitzgerlad 15). It is revealed that Tom is cheating on Daisy causing distress and ruining their relationship but still they put on smiles to appear happy for Nick and Jordan.
- Gatsby is showing the theme of appearance vs reality by buying all his materialistic objects like this yellow car to create this rich appearance of himself. The author shows this theme of appearance vs reality when Nick says, "It was a rich cream color, bright with nickel"(Fitzgerlad 64). Gatsby made sure to buy the fanciest car not because he needed it but because he wanted people to view him as materialistic.
- The author illustrates the theme of appearance vs reality when Tom and Gatsby are fighting and Tom says, "I picked him as a bootlegger the first time I saw him"(Fitzgerlad133). Gatsby's reality of him not being the perfect man that people think he is, is finally revealed. Gatsby's amazing appearance that he has worked so hard to build up was destroyed when Tom revealed that he gets his money in the non morally right way.
