  • The lives of the First Nations was varied. People from the First Nations have lived in every province of Canada today. They did, however, share some fundamental values, such as the fact that individuals are not separate from nature or the non-living world. The Elders' knowledge and experience are highly regarded. All members of the community should respect elders. The Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and Mik'maq are only a few of the groups.

  • In the year 1000, Vikings were the first Europeans to visit North America. The following Europeans arrived 500 years later. The first contacts were made with people who lived near or on the coast. Both First Nations and Europeans were taken aback when they met people who appeared to be so dissimilar to them. They were also ethnocentric, believing that their way of doing things was superior.

  • In the mid-1500s, France entered the race to find an ocean passage to Asia. Many explorers explored North America, including Henry Kelsey and Anthony Henday. They met the First Nations and began trading. The French desired beaver fur, whereas the First Nations desired European goods. The courier de bois explored more of Canada as the trade expanded. The French were also eager to establish a colony in North America. New France was the first French settlement. The increasing profits in the fur trade aided the growth of other sectors of the colony's economy.

The English fur traders and the First Nations trappers' relationship was harmed as a result.

They were both willing to pay more for furs. As they competed for the most furs, some rival traders got into fist fights. Some traders bullied the trappers in order to obtain their furs. Some people began to trade alcohol for furs as well. The First Nations trappers' relationship with rival traders deteriorated rapidly.

  • Intercultural encounters were not always pleasant. European governments eventually claimed sovereignty over First Nations lands. The First Nations, on the other hand, have had a long history of suffering. Their ancient ways of life were turned upside down when they met Europeans. Before the arrival of the Europeans, smallpox, measles, and influenza were not present in North America. They had no protection from the First Nations. The formation of a new culture, the Métis, was one beneficial outcome of contact between First Nations peoples and Europeans. Métis were born to First Nations women and European fur traders.
