  • Hello, I'm Paul. I'm here to inform you a little bit about internet etiquette; "netiquette" for short.
  • Netiquette is the principle of following basic rules of politeness when engaging with others on the internet, similar to etiquette in the real world.
  • This principle especially applies to Social Media platforms such as Twitter or Facebook.
  • The number one rule for conversing with others on the internet is to treat the person on the other side of the screen like an actual person.
  • They are just as human as you are.
  • It can be understandably easy to get caught up in an argument with someone else on the internet for not carrying a similar opinion with you, and eventually start calling them names.
  • After all, we all know that pineapple on pizza is undoubtedly delicious... just me? Alright that's fine.
  • This is what's known as "flaming," and it's important to recognize how to avoid it when conversing with others over the internet.
  • Flaming is simply another word for "offensive comments," and they can lead to what is known as a "flame war" where numerous people are calling each other names and insulting each other.
  • A good way to avoid starting a flame war is to simply walk away from the conversation when someone starts to insult you. Take a breather from the internet before returning to do something else, otherwise you may fuel the argument.
