- Event 3
- I don't want to be whipped even more!
- In this scene, we meet the two main characters and set up the conflict between Frederick Douglass and the evil slave breaker, Edward Covey.
- Climax
- I have to fight him this time!
- I didn't expect him to fight back!
- Douglass has collapsed from sickness/exhaustion in this scene and Covey beat him as a punishment for not getting up. Douglass was too weak, and let him do his worst.
- Resolution
- Don't let me get ahold of you again!
- Then you will come off worse than you did before.
- I'll never let him mess with me again.
- In this scene, Covey comes for Douglass to whip him, but Douglass hides in the field and then runs away.
- I will find you, slave!
- In this scene, Covey tries to surprise Douglass and tie him up, but Douglass resolves to fight back on this one, which takes Covey by surprise.
- In this scene, Douglass has regained his confidence and resolve for freedom. Covey never whips him again, although he occasionally makes an empty threat.
