  • You NEED to be taxed!
  • Simply, no.

  • In 1789 France was deeply in debt due to fighting many wars and a gluttonous king Louis the 16th. This threw France into a serious financial crisis. The king calls the estates general, which is a composition of representatives from each of the three estates. The third estate votes to tax the 1st and 2nd estates to take France out of debt. The first and second vote to keep taxing the 3rd. Since each estate gets one vote the 3rd was outweighed of course. This is called voting by order and this angered the 3rd, rightfully so.
  • March on Versailles
  • We have no food to feed our children!!
  • The king refused to do anything about the third estates pleas of injustice. The third proposed that the votes be counted "by head" instead of by estate. The king refused. Since the other two estates considered the thirds ideas "radical" when the 3rd showed up to their meeting hall it was locked. Fearing dismissal by the king they moved to a nearby tennis court. They vowed to stay their until the king heard their pleas. Thus creating the Tennis Court Oath. They declared themselves the National Assembly and no longer apart of the kings Estates General.
  • The Reign of Terror

  • Contest my men and I, I dare you.
  • On July 14th, 1789 citizens stormed and seized control of the Bastille. This was the center of the monarchy military authority in Paris and home to many political criminals. Parisians stormed the Bastille and when refused entrance they pressed onward. Eventually getting hold of ammunition and firearms. Thus signaling the start of the revolution.
  • The Rise of Napoleon
  • We will not challenge you.
  • Women with and without children rioted over the scarcity and rising prices of bread. They were angry because France was in debt and the king and queen continued to live a life of luxury while the rest of France barely scraped by. The women had hungry children asking where dinner was at home. A small group of women met with the king and provided them with food, promising more in the future.
  • When we do have food it costs 80% of our paychecks.
  • After the death of Robespierre the reign of terror began. Following the republic created by him, a fair amount of public executions took place. Using a new device called the guillotine. A slanted blade would drop on the waiting neck of the latest "detester" of the revolution.
  • I didn't mean to step on his foot. :(
  • Vive la revolution!
  • Napoleon Bonaparte was apart of the military during the French Revolution. As chaos loomed, politicians and nobles alike turned to Napoleon. He had a lot of military success, specifically in Italy. They planned to use him to their advantage, unfortunately for them Bonaparte had other plans. Napoleon staged a coup and named himself Emperor of France. Revolutionaries set up state schools to replace religious ones, and organized systems to aid the poor. They called these structural changes reforms.
