- In the story "Sugmat " The main character in the story is Chona, herself. In the story, it revolves around the character of Chona and her challenges as a mother to her blind child "Dodong" and a wife to her sick husband "Boyet".
- -A very caring mother-A very faithful wife to Boyet- She always believe on what is right - A mother who doesn't give up despite of challenges.

- In the story, Chona has face challenges such as taking care of her blind son alone after her husband died due to sickness. At the same time she also faces challenges to her self when she was having her own sickness which is the never ending pain to her head. Despite of every challenge she faces, her staying strong for her children is the challenges that she have to face each day in her life.
