- Macbeth enters.
- If the assassination of the king could have no consequences, then the murder would be the be-all and end-all of the whole affair, and I would gladly put my soul and the afterlife at risk to do it. But for crimes like these there are still punishments in this world.
- Besides, King Duncan has been such a humble leader, so free of corruption, that people will shed a flood of tears that will drown the wind. I can’t spur myself to action. The only thing motivating me is ambition.
- Lady Macbeth enters.
- What news do you have?
- Has he asked for me?
- Don’t you know he has?
- King has almost finished dinner. Why did you leave the dining room?
- We cannot proceed with our plan to kill King Duncan now, he just honored me and I want to enjoy my award.
- “Was the hope drunk wherein you dressed yourself? Hath it slept since? And wakes it now, to look so green and pale at what it did so freely?” (1. 7. 36-38).
- Please, stop! “I dare do all that may become a man. Who dares do more is none.” (1. 7. 47-48).
- "And to be more than what you were, you would be so much more the man. Nor time nor place did then adhere, and yet you would make both. They have made themselves, and that their fitness now does unmake you.” (1. 7. 50-54).
- “Then what kind of animal were you, when you told me that you desire to kill King Duncan? When you dared to do it, that is when you were a man! "
- “If we should fail?” (1. 7. 58).
- "What cannot you and I perform upon the unguarded Duncan? What not put upon his spongy officers, who shall bear the guilt of our great quell?” (1. 7. 59-72).
- “We fail? But screw your courage to the sticking-place, and we’ll not fail. When Duncan is asleep, his two chamberlains will I with wine and wassail so convince that memory, the warder of the brain, shall be a fume."
- Now, I have decided. I will do all I can to commit this crime. Go now, and pretend to be a friendly hostess.
- Both exit.
