- Good evening, everyone. Forgive me if I don't stay. I have a friend waiting for me in there. My friend Tom. Tom Cat. Some people say that we look alike. But Tom, has the most beautiful whiskers, and I have only a little fuzz. I am hoping... in time...
- Act 1 Scene 3Peter and Anne are discussing.Amsterdam, September, 1942
- All right, Mrs Quack-Quack!
- Peter!
- Anne Outraged - jumping down.
- I can't help it. I only told the truth. I didn't want her here...(Then, with sudden change.) Oh Pim, I was horrible, wasn't I? And the worst of it is, I can stand off and look at myself doing it and know it's cruel and yet I can't stop doing it. What's the matter with me? Tell me. Don't say it's just a phase! Help me.
- Act 1 Scene 4Anne is reflecting about her actions with her dad.Amsterdam,Several months later
- Mr. Frank looks at Anne.
- Anne feels ashamed of her self and starts to reflect with her dad.
- There is so little that we parents can do to help our children. We can only try to set a good example... point the way. The rest you must do yourself. You must build your own character... (Anne falls asleep. Mr Frank watches her for a moment then turns off the lights , and leaves.)
- Act 2 Scene 2Peter and Anne are talking to each other in Peter's room.Amsterdam,1944
- Don't let it bother you. It doesn't bother me.
- Peter seats down.
- Aren't they awful? Aren't they impossible? Treating us as if we were still in the nursery.
- That isn't true. You're much better than I am in dozens of things... arithmetic and algebra and... well, you're a million times better than I am in algebra. (With sudden directness.) You like Margot, don't you? Right from the start you liked her, liked her much better than me.
