- As a burn survivor, Ava lost her family and her way of life, she wants to get surgery to look more like she used to so she can do a musical more confidently.
- Okay Ava! Are you ready for your eye lift surgery?? We'll have to seal your eyes shut.
- Well iv'e had plenty of surgeries before and I NEED to get this done to get old Ava back!
- Ava's best friend Piper is disabled and has been having a rough time. After Ava heard that the boy she likes (Asad) liked Piper she got mad at her and Piper attempted to take her own life.
- Hey Asad...I'm really sorry. I shouldn't have assumed you liked me but what's important now is helping Piper.
- No, I'm sorry. I should have made things more clear. Was your fight with Piper about us?
- SEVERAL DAYS LATER
- Piper returns to school from the hospital and Ava accidentally exposes that Piper has been lying to keep her away from the girl who made her disabled.
- Stay away from me Ava. Clearly you can see that I'm a crazy, obsessive person so just stay away!
- No! I should have been there for you and I don't care what you say I'm staying.
- Ava follows Piper to the bathroom where she expresses how she truly feels. They leave with a strong sense of friendship again.
- Of course I'm sure! You don't need to pretend things are fine with me! Now lets get out of this bathroom! haha!
- I thought if I could walk things could go back to normal. I'm a mess! Are you sure you want to be a part of my life?
- Ava has the role of Glinda in the Wizard of Oz musical. She doesn't think Piper is there although she left a new wig for her. Her uncle (Glenn) and aunt (Cora) who play the role of her caretaker are in the audience.
- Oh no! I feel too nervous to sing. I can't see Asad, Glenn, or Cora!
- Piper shows up and Asad puts a spotlight on just him and Piper so that all Ava can see is them. Piper's line to her is a reference to a phoenix that represents their situation throughout the book. The novel ends with Ava finally singing.
- Piper IS here! Now I can sing!
- Keep flying, Ava!
