Tekst Storyboardowy

  • “Enough,” he said; “the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough.”
  • "I drink to the buried that repose around us."
  • "And I, to your long life."
  • “Nemo me impune lacessit.” (Nobody attacks with impunity.)
  • "and the motto?"
  • Verbal Irony: “Enough,” he said; “the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough.” This is Ironic as in the end, Fortunato actually does end up dying to a cough, due to the nitre.
  • “Pass your hand,” I said, “over the wall; you cannot help feeling the nitre. Indeed, it is very damp. Once more let me implore you to return. No? Then I will positively leave you. But I must first render you all the little attentions in my power.
  • Verbal Irony: Montresor says, “and I drink to your long life.” This is verbal Irony as Montresor is actually wanting to kill Fortunato.
  • Verbal Irony: Montresor says that his family motto is Nobody attacks with impunity. This is ironic because we know that he will kill fortunato because he attacked his family name.
  • Fortunato?
  • A moment more and I had fettered him to the granite. In its surface were two iron staples, distant from each other about two feet, horizontally. From one of these depended a short chain, from the other a padlock. Throwing the links about his waist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it. He was too much astounded to resist. Withdrawing the key I stepped back from the recess.“Pass your hand,” I said, “over the wall; you cannot help feeling the nitre. Indeed, it is very damp. Once more let me implore you to return. No? Then I will positively leave you. But I must first render you all the little attentions in my power.” This passage reflects an evil and treacherous mood as it describes how Montresor locks Fortunato to a wall and says that he will die to the nitre. This portrays to Fortunato that he will die due to his cough and to the poisonous nitre.
  • A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form, seemed to thrust me violently back. For a brief moment I hesitated, I trembled. Unsheathing my rapier, I began to grope with it about the recess; but the thought of an instant reassured me. I placed my hand upon the solid fabric of the catacombs, and felt satisfied. I reapproached the wall. I replied to the yells of him who clamoured. I re-echoed — I aided — I surpassed them in volume and in strength. I did this, and the clamourer grew still. This passage alludes a murderous mood with tension and suffering as while Montresor continues to wall in Fortunato, Fortunato continues to cry and scream for help, causing him to inhale more of the nitre and making him more sick. He continues to grope and jimmy to break free from his bonds but it ends up being useless.
  • Mood: This mood reflects a sense of dread and sadness as after reading about how the coughs of Fortunato suddenly stopped we realize that he has died and that Montresor has Fortunato's blood on his hands and Fortunato died a painful death. That is the mood that is reflected here.
