- Her Husband gives it all to make sure she gets the appropriate attire she desires for the party. She borrows a diamond necklace from her friend to complete the look.

- its me im Mathilde me and my husband lost your necklace that time at the dance and we've been paying it back all these years

- Mathilde loses the necklace she borrowed from her friend, and now she and her husband have to buy a new necklace to replace the lost one, they take loans and are in massive debt. it takes them 10 years to pay off the necklace.
- Mathilde meets jeanne 10 years later and tells her the truth, that her and her husband have been paying the necklace off. Jeanne tells her it wasn't a real necklace and it was only 400 francs. so all this time Mathilde has been working to pay of a 400 franc necklace that she paid thirty six thousand francs for
