- The first person to discover the Americas was actually a man named Leif Ericson.
- Leif Ericson had a very storied life, even before he discovered the Americas.
- He was very intelligent, especially for a viking.
- He, at one point, was banished from Norway and Iceland, which led him to discover Greenland and the Americas.

- Leif was a very skilled sailor.
- Soon after he returned to Greenland, he became restless and decided to investigate stories of lands to the west.
- Leif also became a Christian around the age of 24.
- Leif Ericson initially landed at a place called Helluland, which is now believed to be Baffin Island in Canada. He then sailed south and found another land that he named Markland, which is believed to be the eastern coast of Canada.
- Lief later sailed southeast for two days until he found an island with mainland behind it. He called this place Vinland, which we now know to be L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland.
- Vinland was very different to Leif and his crew. Its winters were not very cold, and the days and nights were more equal here.
- After Leif and his crew left in the spring, few people returned to Vinland. Due to this, Europe basically never heard about its discovery.
