- Beginning
- While a senior in high school, Cory gets good grades and College sports recruits that watch him play football. Except, his father, Troy Maxon dosen't want to help him succeed in that he wants for himself, father making him get a job and quit football.
- You a bigger fool than I thought. To let somebody take away your job so you can play some football.
- Come on Pop! I got to practice, the team needs me!
- Middle
- Before Cory returned back to the house, Troy was into a couple drinks. Refusing to let Cory come in the house, Cory gets made which makee Troy freak out. Soon getting into a huge fight about how Cory has to grow up and how as a kid Troy gave Cory nothing. Cory picking up the baseball bat and each threatening to hurt each other, Cory walks away.
- You a man. Now, let's see you act like one. Turn your behind around and walk out this yard.
- I ain't scared of you.
- End
- At the end of the book, 6 years later Cory comes back home for the first time for Troys funeral. After always disliking his Pop's he docent want to go to his funeral. This shows how Cory wants to finally let go and be done with his Pop's after all the years where he disrespected and scared Cory as a kid.
- Boy, hush your mouth
- Mama, I don't know how to tell you this but I've got to tell you. I'm not going to Papa's funeral
