Life or death. Atticus represents Tom Robinson's shield, his protector throughout the trial. The room filled with and is empowered with mainly white people represents the odds which aren't in favorable in Tom Robinsons case. The trial perceives a more serious and solemn tone.

Discovery of Racism. The aftermath of the trial projects the idea of racism to Jem and Scout obliterating their sense of innocence. Scout's emotional reaction and Jem's more adult reaction symbolizes both of their growth into adulthood. the tone of the aftermath of the trial is more serious, leaving them shocked.
