- No, he won't. The worst thing he'd do is he would send me to that goddam military school.

- Oh, why did you do it? How could you possibly get the ax again?
- Oh, Phoebe, don't even ask me that. I hated everything about that school. It was full of goddam phonies. Everybody kept shutting their doors when someone wanted to come in.
- Well, that made me sad, Phoebe.

- Why is he talking about this?
- There was this Veterans' Day when all the jerks who graduated around 1776 would come to visit. One time, a guy around his fifties knocked on our door and asked if he could use the bathroom.
- Apparently, he had carved his goddam stupid initials on one of the can doors and wanted to see if it was still there. Then he kept talking and talking. Boy, did he depress me.
- Phoebe covers her head with a pillow because she is mad at Holden for getting expelled from a school, again.

- ...I don't know Phoebe I just didn't like anything about that school.
- Phoebe asks Holden why he got the "ax" again. Holden starts to relieve all of his feelings about Pencey Prep and the people in it.

- He mentions the Veterans' Day and an old man who visited Pencey to find his initials.

- Okay then, if you do, name one thing that you like. I bet you can't.
- Phoebe accuses Holden of not liking anything.
- You don't like anything, that's happening.
- Holden refuses it, but Phoebe keeps insisting that he does.
- No, Holden, you don't. You hate schools, you hate people. You hate a million things.
- Phoebe asks Holden to name one thing he likes.
