  • JJ Thomson
  • Hey Mr.Thomson! This raisin bun made me think about your theory. Have you thought about the atom having a nucleus before
  • Don't be so unreasonable. There is no such thing as a nucleus in a atom. It would be "impossible prove that exists in a atom"
  • Mr.Harvey. Do you want to assist me with my experiment to prove that there is a fixed amount of electrons for every substance? We will be using oil as our subject.
  • Robert Millikan and Harvey Fletcher
  • 1909, University of Chicago
  • Oil Drop Experiment? What they heck are they talking about
  • Of course! I have always wanted to prove that debatable topic as well!
  • Look! A mist of atomized oil drops was ionized by the x-ray which makes them negatively charged.
  • Robert Millikan and Harvey Fletcher
  • x-ray
  • Yeah! It looks like the electric charge is quantized and it seems as though the electrons in these droplets of oil are mass less. We can use the known electric field to determine the actual charge of each oil droplet.
  • Although Thomson had discovered electrons, his revised atomic theory and atomic model had not yet mentioned a nucleus.
  • Robert Millikan and Harvey Fletcher
  • Thank you to my co-physicist Milikan who has assisted with my experiment that won me this prize. Without him I wouldn't be able to prove that the electric charge was quantized.
  • How did I not receive any award. I contributed so much of my knowledge yet these people don't know that. I will get my revenge soon.
  • In 1909 the oil drop experiment was performed by Robert A. Milikan and Harvey Fletcher at the University of Chicago to measure the electric charge of an electron of oil.
  • Rutherford
  • Hello Mr.Rutherford! I see that you look very excited about something.
  • Milikan
  • Fletcher
  • Yes! I am excited because I will be probing the structure of an atom using my gold foil experiment that I have developed. I will definitely share my results with you afterwards
  • During the experiment, they observed tiny electrically charged droplets of oil located between two metal surfaces, forming the plates of a capacitor.
  • Rutherford
  • Hmm. Most of the positive mass must be in the nucleus while the remaining negative mass is made up of electrons orbiting the nucleus. The positively charged particles in the middle should be protons.
  • Atomic Model
  • From the results of the oil drop experiment, Millikan received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1923. He along with Fletcher had proved that the electric charge was quantized. This was his most significant experiment because it would affect the future development of the Atomic Theory.
  • What do you have to say about your accomplishment Mr.Milikan?
  • In 1911 Ernest Rutherford discovered the nucleus of an atom at Cambridge University with his gold foil experiment.
  • Rutherford fired positively charged alpha particles at a thin sheet of gold foil. Most passed through with a little deflection but some deflected at large angles, which made him question possible reasons for this occurrence in his experiment.
