- Mrs. Mallard was a woman afflicted with heart trouble. She received news that her husband, Brently Mallard had been in a railroad disaster. His name was on the leading list of “killed”. She felt a wave of grief & went away in her room.
- “Louise open the door! ... you will make yourself ill”
- “Go away. I am not making myself ill”
- She then stood facing a open window. There was something coming to her, but what was it? She didn’t know, but she felt it creeping out the sky reaching towards her through the sounds, scents & the color that filled the air
- She then began to recognize this thing that was approaching her. There would be no one live for for, she would live for herself!!
- She wasn’t becoming ill, she was drinking in a very elixir of life through that open window
- They later walked down the stairs after Josephine, her sister came into the room looking at Louise’s feverish triumph in her eyes...
- When they got to they bottom, they saw somebody open the front door. It was Mr.Mallard. He stood amazed... when the doctors came they said she had died from a heart disease- - of the joy that kills
