- William Penn established the Pennsylvania colony as a safe haven for Quakers. This was due to them being persecuted and imprisoned in Massachusetts for their beliefs.

- In the Middle colonies, there was disagreement on education due to different beliefs. Each family/religious group decided for themselves.
- In Southern colonies, families would either try to pay for tutors or they would pool they resources. Older boys were sent to schools in England or far away cities.
