  • Hello Mr. Morath! Could you help me, I'm struggling with my biology class...
  • DNA Replication, which includes helicase, primase, DNA polymerase, ligase, and the binding proteins. It's all so confusing!
  • Sure, Carter, I'll do my best, what is it that you are struggling with?
  • Thank you!
  • First of all, think of DNA like a medal ladder. You can think about helicase like the metal shear, it cuts the metal.
  • I'll explain it with things that we've been using in the shop so it is easier to understand.
  • Then, you can think about primase like tacking the metal together, it gives you a place to start your weld. Remember that the DNA polymerase can only make new DNA from 5' to 3', so pretend that you can only weld the new metal from 5' to 3' which in our case is right to left. That is for the leading side. For the lagging side, it is backward, so you will have to tack multiple times, then weld from 5' to 3', which would be left to right now. It is similar to backstepping
  • Thank you Mr. M, but what about ligase and the binding proteins?
  • So after all of these processes happen we have 2 medal ladders instead of one! Thank you so much, I think that I understand now!
  • Oh yeah, the binding proteins, the are like a clamp. They hold the metal so it doesn't move. Ligase is like when you quickly run your weld underneath the wire wheel to shine it up.
