- GO FILTHY!! BREAK THEIR ANKLES WITH THAT CROSSOVER!!
- Me and my twin Jordan Bell (who insists that everyone calls him JB), are almost thirteen. How to tell us apart? Ever since I saw my dad on ESPN's Best Dunks Ever, his locks flying through the air like wings, carrying him high to the hoop, I knew I also needed wings some day. Meanwhile, JB gets his head shaved every month. My Dad also has a championship ring, which he won't let me or JB wear until we become 'Da Man.'
- My name is Josh Bell, but everyone calls me Filthy McNasty after Horace Silver's Paris Blues album, which my dad, Chuck 'Da Man' Bell loves. He used to be a basketball player, and teaches us all he knows, including his wicked crossover.
- The trouble really started between me and JB after JB cut my precious locks and didn't say sorry. It started after we realized dad quit basketball because he didn't want to have surgery on his knee injury. It started when he met Alexis. The pulchritudinous (having great beauty) new girl with her Sweet Tea smile. We used to hang out all the time, but ever since he met "Miss Sweet Tea," JB's been thinking less and less about basketball, and more and more about GIRLS. I really miss him.

- Dad collapsed in a one on one game with me almost a month ago. He had to go to the hospital. He has hypertension, and high blood pressure. Mom is away visiting him. JB says he doesn't feel like playing, so he and Sweet Tea support me in the championship final. We never really made up when I almost broke his nose on purpose in a basketball game. I just couldn't take it anymore, but Dad said for me and JB to be there for each other.
- Uh-oh. Mom says Dad is having complications. He's in a coma because of a myocardial infarction, when the blood is blocked from the heart so that the heart muscle is damaged, or dies. I think he's dying. Over on the sidelines, JB buries his head in Sweet Tea. This is for you Dad...

- Climax
- We won the national championship, but for once, I don't care. Dad is gone. He died of a heart attack. I am unprepared for death. At the funeral, Mom is crying. She will not look in the coffin. Dad was the light of my world and now that he's gone, every night is starless. The preacher says,
- Falling Action
- "A great father, son, and husband has crossed over. Amen."
- Our house is so packed with friends and family, I have to get out to get air. Everyone is talking and laughing. Even Mom is smiling. JB is gone. He's probably with Sweet Tea, because if I had a girlfriend that's where I would be, but I don't, so I do the next best thing. Free throws. Dad once got 50 free throws IN A ROW. The most I ever made was 19. I shoot the first one. Swish. I make the next 12. Then 27. I am making them with my eyes closed. I feel closer to Dad, out here shooting free throws. I shoot another. 49 free throws. I am moments from fifty. Suddenly JB walks up. "Dad told me to give you this." It's Dad's championship ring. "I guess you Da Man now, Filthy." JB says. And for the first time in my life, I don't want to be. "I bet you you'll miss number fifty." JB says. He walks away. "Hey," I shout. He turns, and I hand him the ball.

- JB fixes his eyes on the goal. I watch as the ball leaves his hands like a bird up high, skating the sky,crossing over us.

- Theme
- The theme for The Crossover is that you should always be there for your family. Josh's dad said that JB and Josh should always be there for each other, and they make up in the end. Basketball rule #1 says that "...Your family is the court and the ball is your heart...always leave your heart on the court." This means you should always leave your heart in your family.
