  • Stella and Loretta are continuing their argument about something Kennedy said to Loretta’s daughter, “‘No, I understand,” Loretta said. “ I don’t blame her. It all comes from the home, see. And like a fool, I let you into mine. The loneliest goddamn women in this whole neighborhood. I should’ve known” (Bennett 199). Loretta didn't like that Stella was saying things around Kennedy that she knew wasn't appropriate for a child.
  • What kind of person is Stella?
  • How does Stella look?
  • Stella is starting to pass for white in place within her town, "During her last summer in Mallard, weeks after venturing into the charm shop, she'd gone to the Southern Louisiana Museum of Art on an ordinary Saturday morning, not Negro Day, and walked right up to the main entrance, not the side door where Negroes lined up in the alley" (Bennett 149). Stella was nervous that the security guard would look at her and think that she was black.
  • Stella started to realize that the neighbors had someone Kennedy's age to play with, Because we don't play with niggers,'" she said, and maybe it was her harsh tone, or the fact that she'd never said that word to her daughter before, but that was the end of it" (Bennett 165). Stella didn't want Kennedy playing with the Walkers' daughter because she didn't want other people in the neighborhood to think that Stella is Black.
  • What are some key things Stella says?
