  • What are VERB PATTERNS, how do they work, and why do you need to know this?
  • VERB PATTERNS are the three forms that verbs can take when they follow other verbs (even in a chain of more than two verbs! ex., I need to go to do some shopping).WHY, oh WHY, do you need this?
  • Because (1) not all three forms are possible after all verbs,(2)there is no one rule, you just have to learn them as you need them, and (3) sometimes the meaning of the second verb is very different based on the form it takes!
  • The three forms are:infinitive with toinfinitive with no to-ing form
  • EXAMPLES with like / love / hate / prefer:GENERIC: Cats like / love / hate / prefer sleeping.SPECIFIC: Cats like / love / hate / prefer to sleep during the day.
  • EXAMPLES with rememberTHESE DAYS with the infinitive with to: He remembers to walk in the park every day.PAST with the -ing form: He remembers walking in the park with his grandpa when his grandpa was already very old, but he was still young.
  • EXAMPLES with stopIDENTIFIES stopped action, -ing form: He stopped driving. (N.B., unless the reason is specified, we do NOT know what it is, unless it is clear from the context)IDENTIFIES THE PURPOSE of the stopped action, infinitive with to: He stopped to text her. (N.B., unless the stopped action is specified with an -ing form, we do NOT know what it is, unless it is clear from the context)
  • EXAMPLES with tryHARD to do, probably unsuccessful, with the infinitive with to: I tried to box, but it was too hard for me, so I quit.NOT HARD to do, or an EXPERIMENT, probably successful, with the -ing form: I tried boxing, and it's challenging, but I really love it, so I want to do it, again.
  • Those were just some common examples. What actions do you want to talk and write about? Do you already know their verb patterns? If not, look them up, or ask a classmate or your teacher, and write a few of them, here, to remember.
