The story is narrated by Scout Finch, a young girl in Maycomb, Alabama, during the 1930s. Scout lives with her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus Finch, a lawyer and their cook Calpurnia.
During Scout's first day of school, her teacher learns that she can read and write , and becomes furious and upset from her father not teaching her the "correct way". When Scout speaks to Jem he informs her about the "Dewey Decimal System" which was a new system of teaching that they were using at school to help students to learn differently.
Coming from Scout's repercussion's Walter Cunningham is invited to dinner by Calpurnia. When Scout follows Calpurnia into the kitchen , Calpurnia yells at Scout for being disrespectful and not treating Walter like company acting all high and mighty.
Scout and Jem are fascinated by Boo Radley, the mystery neighbor. They want to catch a look so they create games and make dares to touch the Radley house, despite warnings from Atticus and neighborhood rumors. Scout finds chewing gum and many other things in the knothole of a tree near the Radley home.
Miss Maudie compares Mr. Radley and Atticus , and by this she says that Mr. Radley takes the bible too litteraly while Atticus is more of a morally correct individual. She explains that some men are more invested in getting into heaven than they are concerned about their current living situation.
Jem, Scout and Dill try to look through the window of the Radley house but get shot at by Nathan Radley. They escape but Jem loses his pants. They say it was through strip poker. Jem goes back for his pants to avoid trouble with Atticus.
Jem tells Scout that when he went back for his pants they had been folded over the fence and sewn up. They find more presents in the knot-hole and write a thank-you letter to the sender but the knothole is filled with cement.
