- Hello, my autotrophic friends! I, the Narrator of Plant-y-ness, am here to tell you about Photosynthesis! Photosynthesis is the process by which plants take sunlight, water and Carbon Dioxide, and make oxygen and sugar! What's the formula? Light + 6 CO2 + 6 H2O == O2 + glucose!
- Stroma
- First off, photosynthesis happens in only plants -- with two different reactions! The "light" reaction happens in the thylakoid membrane, while the "dark" reaction happens in the Stroma.
- Thylakoid membrane
- Leaves are both tree's lungs and food-makers. Within the leaf, the Upper and Lower Epidermis make sure that water loss is minimal, while the Xylem and Phloem transport water and sugar to the cells and chloroplasts.
- Photosynthesis occurs with the help of three factors: Temperature, Sunlight, and Moisture. In the fall, when it becomes more cold and overcast, trees stop producing chlorophyll and go into dormancy. When the chlorophyll breaks down, it loses its green hue to fall colors.
- Have you ever wondered why plants look green? It's because when white light from the sun hits the leaf, it absorbs all the colors, except for green, which it can't use. This light is reflected, and hits our eye.
- Plants are essential to our ecosystem. They take our Carbon Dioxide and turn it into oxygen for us to breathe. They keep the earth alive! Let's take care of them.
