The capital of Kansas is Topeka. Other large cities include Wichita, Overland Park, Kansas City, Olathe, and Lawrence.
Kansas earned its nickname, "Sunflower State" due to its abundance of the bright yellow flower. The state motto, "To the Stars Through Difficulty", symbolizes the dispute over whether Kansas should be admitted as a state that is pro or anti-slavery.
Botanica, The Wichita Gardens opened in 1987, and contained only four gardens. Now is consists of over 17 acres, and has all types of gardens including a railroad garden, a butterfly garden, and even a Shakespeare garden!
Kansas' state tree is the Cottonwood. Its state flower is the sunflower, and its state bird is the Western Meadowlark.
Kansas was the 34th state admitted into statehood on January 29, 1861.
Langston Hughes, born in February of 1902, was a famous African American writer and poet, known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance, a time when African American culture, art, and music were celebrated. Hughes was raised by his grandmother in Lawrence, Kansas until he was 13 years old.
