- Louise Mallard was afflicted with heart trouble and her husband, Brently Mallard had just been reported as dead after a railroad accident. Her sister, Josephine, and Brently's best friend, Richards, came to carefully tell her about her husband's death.
- FREE!
- Free...
- Free...
- Louise survived hearing the dreadful news, but began immediately sobbing and retreated upstairs to be alone in her room.
- HE'S ALIVE?!
- Louise sat down and looked out her bedroom window. As she examined the scenery outside, she felt apprehensive and tried to suppress the build of unfamiliar emotions within her.
- Oh no!
- But her emotions overwhelmed her, and she spontaneously began repeating the word, "Free". Imagining the long life she'd have independently, she felt ecstatic. She would now be free, on her own without anyone to hold her back or oppress her.
- Please come out Louise!
- Shortly after, Louise returned downstairs after Josephine begged her to leave her room. The front door unexpectedly opened, and Brently comes in. He actually hadn’t been in the train accident or even aware that one had happened.

- Upon the sight of her revived husband, Louise fainted. When the doctors arrived, they said she had died of heart disease--"of the joy that kills."
