  • On 1429, amazingly, the French finally achieved a turning point in the war when they won at the Siege of Orléans. Throughout the next year Joan inspired the French troops and led them to a several more victories.

  • They developed new, powerful, more accurate cannons that not only decimated charging knights, but also easily penetrated strong castle walls. These tactics swept the French to successive victories, until in 1453, with their win at the Battle of Castillon,the French had won nearly all their landholdings back and the Hundred Years’ War was finally over.
  • With the end of the Hundred Years’ War, Europe also began to move out of the Middle Ages. Feudalism was figuratively dying, with castles and knights now obsolete in warfare. Nationalism grew, as people now primarily thought of themselves as part of a strong, unified country owing loyalty to their monarch, rather than as vassals to a local lord.  The end of the Hundred Years’ War combined with recovery from the Black Death helped contribute to a massive increase in European population. All these societal changes gradually led Europe out of the Middle Ages and into the period that would be known as the Renaissance.
