Students at Orlando West went on strike and refused to attend class on April 30, 1976. Doing so, it spread rebellion to other Soweto schools.

  • The police released a dog into the crowd of students. It was a warning of what they were about to do if they did not stop protesting. The students then started to throw rocks at the dog, killing it.

  • The protesters were startled when a police officer shot into the air as their plan of releasing a dog into the crowd of students wasn't a success. More bullets were fired by the police into the mob of children and teenagers, causing chaos.
  • Stop this protest!
  • A riot breaks out. Police officers start shooting toward the crowd, killing innocent children along the way. The doctors rejected the police's request for the hospital to produce a list of all victims with gunshot wounds so that they are prosecuted for rioting.
  • One of the most well-known incidents in the fight against apartheid, the Soweto Uprising significantly changed the socio-political landscape in South Africa. It has marked a turning point in South Africa's quest for independence. In the following year, rioting spread to other parts of South Africa.
