- The author a is a freshman for his first year of high school . He feels awkward and strange staring over as a freshman . He missed his old teachers and friend so much .
- one sunday afternoon , not long after he started high school ,he was sitting at home at the dinning room table doing homework . it was a cold and windy fall day, and he had a fire in the fire place. as usual ,my red tabby cat was lying on top of all his papers , purring loudly and occasionally swatting at his pen for entertainment's sake. his mother kept stoking the fire to keep warm.

- suddenly the author smelled something strange, and then he notice it .... smoke pouring in through the seams of the ceiling . the smoke began to fill the room so quickly that he could barely see. the poet and his mother ran to the front door at right time because the roof started catching fire

- the narrator ran to the neighbours to call the fire department to put off the fire
- the poet's mother ran back into the house to collect some important documents , pictures and letters written by husband before his death and those were only thing she had to remember him . poet tries to run back of his mom and a fire fighter stopped him and tolled him that other firefighters will bring her back
- a fireman brought his mother out and after five hours later, the fire was finally out . the house was completely burned and suddenly the author remembered his cat . he searched the cat and he was not able to find it . the author broke down in tears and cried. the fireman informed them not to enter the house for that night.
