- Grendel has been coming nightly to the Heorot and taking men from it for 12 years.
- Grendel's Mother
- One night, Grendel goes to the Heorot and looks around to see the it is filled with sleeping soldiers. Beowulf catches Grendel with his hands and rips his arm off. He displays his arm on the top of the rafters for all to see.
- King Hrothgar
- Oh! Brave man, I envy your bravery. Should there be anything you desire in exchange for this brave act?
- "Oh shelterer of warriors and your people’s loved friend,That this one favor you should not refuse meThat I, alone and with the help of my men,May purge all evil from this hall". (pg.9)
- Grendel retreats back to his cave where he slowly dies from him wound.
- Beowulf v. the Dragon

- In order to seek revenge, Grendel's mother attacks Herot and retrieves Grendel's arm- which was held as a trophy by Beowulf- and flees to an underwater cave. Beowulf follows her and soon kills her by using a magic sword blessed by giants, which is able to defeat her.
- Upon Beowulf's arrival, King Hrothgar welcomes Beowulf soon after Wulfgar has escorted him to Herot. Beowulf makes a request to the KIng as an exchange for his bravery-being alone with the help of his men, should purge all evil. This quote describes an Epic Hero, one that is on a quest.
- 50 years later...Beowulf has to defend his people by killing a fire-breathing dragon. Beowulf along with the help of Wiglaf successfully kills the dragon. Despite this, Beowulf later dies by a wound on his neck caused by the same dragon;"The monster came quickly toward him,Pouring out fire and smoke, hurryingTo its fate." (pg.26)
