- In the beginning of the book Stanley the main character in the book has gotten himself in some trouble, by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It all started when Stanley was coming home from school, a pair of Clyde Livingstone shoes fell off the side of a bridge. Stanley s first reaction was to run because he doesn't know what to do. A police officer stops Stanley to ask him why he is running. The officer finds out that the pair of shoes that Stanley has in his hand have been reported stolen from the local shoe store. As a result of this action, Stanley is arrested for theft and is taken to court.
- Climax
- The conflict in the book Holes is the main character Stanley goes to a prison (Camp Green Lake) for a crime he did not commit. The officer believed that Stanley stole the shoes when he really was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Another conflict Stanley has to overcome is the curse that is put on his family.
- Falling Action
- The rising action in the book is when Stanley arrives to the Camp and meets the other boys there, X-Ray, Zero, Squid, Zigzag and Armpit. X Ray is the self declared leader and takes the what the other kids find so he gets the day off. Zero is quiet and shy and later Stanley's friendship with Zero starts to become a problem for the other boys when Zero starts to dig Stanley's holes for him so he can teach Zero how to read and write. This causes the boys to fight and them to make fun of Zero
- Resolution
- The climax of the book is when Zero can't take being made fun of anymore and leaves the Camp and runs away into the desert without food or water. Over the next few days the boys become increasingly worried about him and Stanley sneaks out as well to go and find his friend and hopes he finds him safe.
- The falling action in the book is when Stanley and Zero's escape from camp changes their plans. They want to uncover the treasure that everyone is having the kids secretly digging holes looking for and escape with it, a plan that they never would have tried before running away.
- The resolution to the book Holes is Stanley and Zero find the treasure that everyone had been searching for. Through talking to Zero (Henry Zeroni) Stanley also learned that their families are connected to Stanley's curse and they were able to break it by fulfilling his great grandfathers obligation to the Zeroni family. When they found the treasure the Warden tried to say it was hers but it has Zero's name on it. Stanley and Zero get the camp closed down and are pardoned for their crimes when it was a big misunderstanding.
