- There was a knight who by force took a maiden. This act made such a stir in the kingdom that the king wanted to behead him. Butthe king decided to exercise his grace so ceaselessly, and he gave the Queen the case and granted her his life. (41-43)

- [The knight] took his leave and went. But never touched a coast, country, or town in which there seemed to be any two willing to agree. (64-70)

- His year was up now it was the day. As he rode home in a dejected mood there wasn't a living creature to be seen. Except one old woman crouched upon the green. (133-144). The old lady told him the answer to his question and off to the court they went.

- O Queen, I've kept my day and kept my word and have my answer ready. A woman wants the self-same sovereignty over her husband.

- Arriving at the kingdom, the knight shares the answer that the old lady has given him.Maid, wife, and widow cried, 'He's saved his life!' Then the old lady starts to speak about the promise the knight has made to her.

- My lady, my love, my dearest wife, I leave the matter to your wise decision. (376-377)
- All went for nothing, he was forced to wed. She asked that night: "You have two choices; which one will you try?" - Pleased with his answer, the old lady turns into a young, beautiful, and faithful wife. Do with my life and death as you think best. Cast up the curtain, husband. Look at me! And when indeed the knight had looked to see, Lo, she was young and lovely, rich in charms. In ecstasy he caught her in his arms. So they lived ever after to the end in perfect bliss (380-404)
