  • To find out the bacteria behind the infection, we have examined the samples under a microscope and gram stained them.
  • Great, but before you tell me the bacteria identity, what's a gram stain?
  • Well, when further determining the identity of bacteria, we examine the morphology and arrangement of the bacteria. Then we would do the gram staining process.
  • When gram staining, we test the composition of the bacteria's cell wall. Gram negative bacteria appear pink and have a thin peptidoglycan layer. Gram positive bacteria appear purple and have a thick peptidoglycan layer. We do this because gross examination with the naked eye isn't enough to determine identity since colonies can have similar characteristics in appearance.
  • So, after our examination and staining, the bacteria found in all patient samples were gram positive and had a cocci cluster morphology and arrangement.
  • Our gram staining results match with the results of Staphylococcus aureus. So, we have finally identified the bacteria behind the infected patients.
  • So now we will come up with a plan of treatment and prevention.
  • Fantastic. Thank you so much for your help in solving this nosocomial nightmare.
  • Great job. We solved the case.
  • Yeah, time to write that plan now.
